Sling shot - brennivs - tony drake - 03-19-2008 I was looking for my pugio press when I came across these I did many years ago along with some plumbata I forgot I had D D Regards Brennivs Re: Sling shot - Marcus Mummius - 03-19-2008 Great stuff! Re: Sling shot - Gaius Julius Caesar - 03-19-2008 Those would be pretty leathal  Re: Sling shot - PhilusEstilius - 03-19-2008 I have loads of originals Tony, most are lozenger shaped however a couple are shaped as Acorns. This was a common shape for these things, infact I have found many acorn ones over the years. Re: Sling shot - brennivs - tony drake - 03-20-2008 I suppose if you got hit by one of them Brian it would go towards your one a day   Do you think they were made in a mold or just a acorn stuck in some clay then poured :?: Regards Brennivs Re: Sling shot - garrelt - 03-20-2008 The thumb ones fly well. Made some years back, they all ended up in the pond  Re: Sling shot - brennivs - tony drake - 03-20-2008 Thanks Garrelt lol: one of the lads in the group is quiet good Regards Brennivs Re: Sling shot - PhilusEstilius - 03-20-2008 The acorn ones I have found over the years have been of differing sizes, I do think however that the slingers might have just made a mold of sorts. They may have used an acorn for a mold, but then some have been a bit large for a real sized nut. Re: Sling shot - Hibernicus - 03-20-2008 We've piles and bags of each! I enjoy the public reaction to the various styles! If you have the capability, a sling "bullet" casting demonstration at a public venue using tin (or aluminum though it requires higher heat) instead of lead is very popular! The kids can go away with a sling "bullet" in the shape of their finger. Re: Sling shot - PhilusEstilius - 03-20-2008 I would agree with Sean about the kids, It's great to involve your audience in these events. I used to be in a group and also did talks for the kids at schools, however here in the UK Roman history is on the schools corriculum so one had to be very carefull about facts or you would have the kids picking you up on things. With most things one can flannel, however with children its a more different situation. Anyway Sean I've got loads of chunks of Roman lead, if I could find some way of getting it to you then you could lower the temperature and give them all the real thing. Re: Sling shot - Hibernicus - 03-20-2008 Brian Check your PM Sean Re: Sling shot - brennivs - tony drake - 03-20-2008 Thanks Hibernicvs D Regards Brennivs Re: Sling shot - Robert - 03-20-2008 I think Hib is refering to some of the lesser properties of lead, namely that it gives of toxic fumes when heated. Using tin would cut down on that problem dramaticly. I would not use aluminium because of the great difference in weight, a hefty slug held in the hand convays a far more potent imagination picture (BOING!) then the lighter casts. By the way, thumb made shot can be rendered more aerodynamicly stable by some well aimed taps with a hammer at the flat end of the cast. Is there any evidence on that in the finds?? |
