centurion sagum fixing - MartinWard - 03-18-2008

Hi Guys and Girls,

Can anyone enlighten me on how to secure the sagum onto the left shoulder when its folded? I have a fine wool material but when its folded its going to be to thick to secure with a fibula. I will be wearing hamata and eventually a harness, is there a way to secure it to either of these?

thanks in anticipation

The sagum of our centurio is attached to his phalerae straps with some (leather)rope.

jvrjenivs,

Any possibility of getting some pictures of how it is done?
I.e. fabric dimensions, and a play by play pictorial on securing it.
I have tried it a few times but usually end up frustrated and looking like a dog chasing his tail before I throw it on the ground and jump up and down on it cursing in Gaullish

I'll see if I could arrange some photo's this weekend, when we will have an the first real event of this year. Big Grin

About the dimension, I don't know for sure as it is not my own, but I guess it is about 50 cm width and 180 cm long. First binded together and mounted on the phaleraeshirt. A second leatherstrap is attached to it on the inside, to secure the left of the sagum to your lorica. The other side is stuck between your lorica and cingulum/balteus. Hope you get what I mean.

Here a photo of me wearing one.

This is how I attach mine, with a fibula. I also try to achieve the draping found on the Rhineland steles, with varying degrees of sucess. The folding and draping of a sagum is still something I am working at.

John,

That is exactly the way I had in my mind's eye, but I seem to be something of a gimp when it comes to sagum...

If you have the time, and patience, perhaps you might be able to share details of fabric dimensions, and a play by play pictorial on securing it.
Feel free to PM me if you prefer as well.
