I pasted together a number of Google maps images to get a large imahe of the Masada plateau and added the camps:

Re: Masada - Gaius Julius Caesar - 03-09-2008

Excellent work robert. Are the lines between C & D and a couple of other camps part of the fortifications, as in walls, or are the ya modern feature?

Re: Masada - Robert Vermaat - 03-09-2008

Thanks!

They're ancient. I assume the 'dots' are remains of watchtowers. I made a map earlier with all the ancient features:

Robert,

What was the distance traveled by the wall around the Masada complex.

Hi Paolo,

There never was a complete circuit around Masada. Especially the southern part was so steep that no wall (could/needed to) be constructed.

Re: Masada - Doc - 03-13-2008

Robert,

Thanks for the answer. I was not aware that the circuit was incomplete.

Re: Masada - Magnus - 03-13-2008

Sure. When I last visited (years ago) it was the car park, youth hostel, that sort of touristic stuff. There was also a small military detachment on the site, I suppose they have their barracks there as well, or maybe just a police post.

Just noticed this thread, Robert. Great work.
I wish I'd noticed it earlier -- I could've used your photo on Monday, when I was lecturing on Roman siege warfare.

Also the base of the cable-car system.

Re: Masada - Magnus - 03-14-2008

So is it a really cool site or what? Do they have a mini-museum set up near there that displays all the finds?

Not when I was there. But that was in 1985!

Not in 1990 either.

Awesome! - sophus_tree - 03-17-2008

That's great! Laudes!

One of the groups I am in represents Legion Ten Fretensis--the Legion that was there.

May we copy your image and put it on our website, [url:3a6ex0as]http://www.legionten.org[/url]?

Of course, we'll give you full attribution! I'll PM you once it's up so you can see.

Hi Michael,

You want to use the photo or the map, or both?
Be my guest to use either.
