My new Centurion Balteus... - Magnus - 02-28-2008

Got my latest balteus finished, it's for my centurion impression. Went sans apron. Buckle is from a SoTW balteus (I think), frogs from Raymond's quiet press and the plates from me. Leather is dyed an indigo blue, and the straps holding the pugio a darker navy blue, studded with copper and brass rivets. The plates are the ones I tinned, but sanded the highest areas on the rings so the brass shows through. The buckle and frogs were also selectively tinned, and all plates were attached with copper domed rivets.

Got one suggestion about the pugio suspension (if you wanna hear it)

The only thing I would have done differently is to have boxed it up and mailed it to me!

Excellent work, as usual, Magnus. :!: I've added to your laus collection.

I thought this was the one you were going to wear?

That's the one he wears beneath the tunic Paul

Nice job on the other one though Magnus!

I think I know what Jim means 'bout the pugio...

Indeed, it would be more faithful to most sculptural sources if it hung level with the belt, instead of hanging lower on long straps.

Very nice job on the belt!

Vale,

Hey Jim, of course i'd love to hear about the pugio suspension!

Paul, that was just uncalled for. You know damn well I only wear silk thongs. I'm rather insulted.

Re: My new Centurion Balteus... - Tarbicus - 02-28-2008

Matt, it's summed up in this thread:
http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=20414
Specifically Crispus's links to the RAT Imagebase examples. They seem to show the topmost suspension loops off the pugio are level with the belt frogs, rather than the pugio hanging down with loose suspenders.

Re: My new Centurion Balteus... - Magnus - 02-28-2008

All of Crispvs's links were of grave steles from the early 1st century. All were using the double balteus and pugio attachment...are there any from my period of the early 2nd century? I'd also like my straps different lenghts, so it puts the pugio on a slight angle, towards the front of my body so it's easier to grab.

Re: My new Centurion Balteus... - Magnus - 02-28-2008

Hmmm....I just got an idea.... Were the bottom rings used at all??? Or do we not know....what about securing the top rings as in the early imperial/late republic style, but then use the straps I made to attach to the bottom rings?
