Beta testers searching - Mitra - 02-09-2008
I created a little software to make logistics simulation for pre-modern army. The software is far from perfect, and for the moment I leaved for "after first release" much of ideas I have for advanced implementations, for time problems.
Now I need some volunteers to test the first basic version of software; what I exactly need, is a feedback over the possible program error, difficult experienced by the user, errors (grammar (my english is far from perfect or points not clear) over the manual, idea for future changes, installation problems (the program is in english, but developed over a italian Windows XP).
I need 10 testers at maximum, so please, request to proof the software only if:
- You are interested to logistics and know the argument
- You have time to lost for make proof and give me the feedback and describe well the problem
The final release isn't far (this depend much from the number of errors), so to have the free complete program you don't must wait much time.
If you are interested to have the program send a PM to me, and I send the link where download the ZIP file (the archive is completed with installation program, manual and some test files). When the number is completed, I advice to stop to send PM in this topic. Naturally i send you also my email where send the comment and error reporting (please use the object "SALS" in the email to be sure the antispam do not blocks her).

It might help to explain to members first what exactly it would do. What does it calculate? What information goes in, what comes out?

Essentialy:
Food consume for men and animals, weight transported, load capability, column march lenght, army velocity, march km. made.
The program in short term permit to set the various army components (with consume, load, velocity,etc, data) up to maximum details (in the manual you find the legion example); you have human, animals, transport and siege equip. components. After you can set a campaign simulation setting various variables (army numbers, terrain, climate, naval or river transport), a made a day by day simulation (making also various changes respect the initial settings). Each day you have reporting data (exportable to pdf) about the both the single army components (consume, space occupied in march column, load capability,etc) and the total army values (weight transported, load capability, km. made, column lenght). Terminated the simulation you have a final report with the total for the campaign and some reference values.
This is the basic version of program: I have in preview to made more complex developments (like a advanced reporting, management of big units, campaign saving, etc).
Initially can appear complex, especially set the army(for this I have insert legion files as example), but can be very helpful for make the logistical calculation for ancient armies in detailed level.

I might be interested, but I'm too busy right now with university. The program is a cool idea. Does your model cover deaths of humans and animals to disease/hunger etc.?

For the basic software i have prefered leave the greater liberty to manage day by day inserting the basic buttons to recreate all the conditions (more work but a greater range of possibilities). So you don't have a automatic routine to manage the losses of men and animals, but each day you can change both the campaign condition (terrain, climate,etc) that the army numbers. So you can "kill" men, lowering the numbers or at example simulate the killing of cavalry horse moving cavalrymen to infantry (or create a ad hoc component "unmounted cavalryman" in our army components).
