Iter Romanum MMVIII - jvrjenivs - 01-29-2008

I would like to let you all know that the Legio XV Primigenia is planning a walk from bergkamen to Xanten (Germany) this summer.

I'm walking with them.

More information on their website (only in german)

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - Robert Vermaat - 01-30-2008

Thanks for the update Jurjen! Looks like a tough walk!

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - jvrjenivs - 04-21-2008

Last weekend I was not in Rome, because we had a trainingcamp for the mars. On friday we started with building up the campement just outside the Vetera I castra at Xanten. Here a couple of pics of our weekend. It was great, and those over 7 km marching with full-pack (for the first time) was even nice, I get more interest in the mars this summer.

Looks great, Jurjen.
Was it very hard? Walking on cobblestones with caligae is known to be tough on the soles.
Good luck, see ya.

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - Robert Vermaat - 04-22-2008

Great pictures!

That camp looks very real indeed - you don't often see that a ditch is actually cut. Although, I must say that those stakes do not looks particularly harmful to an attacker - or was that the point here, maybe?

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - jvrjenivs - 04-22-2008

Actually my new caligea did a really good job. I had no problem with them on stones, concrete, etc.

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - Matt Lukes - 04-22-2008

Most impressive- I've always wondered what it was like to march a good distance with all the stuff a typical legionary would've had to carry. How did the armor do in spreading out the load and do you think it helped avoid the issues one might have with straps, etc. right on a shoulder, for example?

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - jvrjenivs - 04-22-2008

The way of carrying we used was quite good to do. I had no problems with the weight anyway. But I have to state I didn't carry much water and food with me, and that would add some more weight. I also got some problems with holding the furca in place, but I guess that would be experience. I think the march of this summer would give more experience on this kind of questions.

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - jvrjenivs - 08-02-2008

Okay, just back from 2 very hard, but also very wonderfull weeks. I walked about 70 km on my Caligea, and 10 km on modern shoes (to see the difference, and the day we walked on modern shoes, was one of the hardest days).

There was a lot of press interest. National German television visited us, including live stuff, many, many newspapers, international and natinal radio stations, and so on. A wonderfull time, and I hope to do such a thing again in a couple of years.

Here some pics from diverent press releases.

And if you weren't DEAD tired I would ask you to rush to Archeon and join us..

Just one question - why in a blue tunic?

Re: Iter Romanum MMVIII - jvrjenivs - 08-03-2008

You probably wouldn't read this before you are off for the Archeon, but I'll join you there today.

A blue tunic. Simple because I love that fabric Big Grin A very nice color. And just some other color than that boring red.
