Silver Sword Hilt - Doc - 01-07-2008

There is a gladius hilt that is silver from Rheingonheim. Can anyone provide any information as to how the hilt could have been possibly made.

Is it silver foil over wood or silvered brass over wood.

Can anyone provide a good photo of this hilt. I know the one from roman coins however I would like a closer photo to see some of the details.

Thanks

Paolo

I believe it was silver sheet.
there is a European source who does this type of hilt.

Yes it's Erik Konig. Go to his swords pages

Re: Silver Sword Hilt - Doc - 01-07-2008

Thanks all for the reply and the photo.

I was speaking to an armorer here in the States and he said that based on what he could see on his photo, the hilt was silvered brass not silver.

This is why I posted the thread. I was not sure whcih way to go.

Where is this sword currently. It would be good if I could get its details and dimensions.

Thanks

Paolo

Re: Silver Sword Hilt - Crispvs - 01-07-2008

It's definitely silver. It even has the weight of the silver used stamped onto it (presumably so that the soldier who paid for it would know he had not been cheated).
