Lancaster Roman Cavalryman - Graham Sumner - 12-20-2007

It is not often that a major Roman tombstone is found, even rarer that anything readily available for the general public will be published about a new discovery of any kind!

The Lancaster Roman cavalry tombstone was only discovered just over two years ago and therefore Lancashire Museums are to be congratulated on the publication of 'Triumphant Rider, The Lancaster Roman Cavalry Tombstone'. by Stephen Bull.

The book is well illustrated and includes not only numerous pictures of the Lancaster tombstone in its various states of preservation but those of the other British cavalry tombstones too, including many which are less well known.

There is also a reconstruction of the cavalryman provided by yours truly. In fact I have produced two versions. The slightly more conventional version is published here, while the even less conventional version will be published in a forthcoming book published by Greenhills.

Mention is also made of the Roman Army enthusiast  , who wrote to the Queen when there were initial fears that the Lancaster tombstone might be sold overseas.

Graham.

Look forward to seeing your reconstruction, Graham.

Graham,

Sounds like an interesting read (and nicely priced).

Is it correct that the less conventional reconstruction will be published in the book “Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldierâ€

"Mention is also made of the Roman Army enthusiast , who wrote to the Queen when there were initial fears that the Lancaster tombstone might be sold overseas." Yup, that would be me.....what an honour to be mentioned in the book! Does it say if it had any effect?

I'll try and get hold of the book- as its not on Amazon, I assume its in the museum?

The Queen's response to my letter is here- long to reign over us, says I!

BOOK - Graham Sumner - 12-21-2007

copies of the book can be had from Museum of Lancashire, Stanley St, Preston, Lancs. PR 1 4YP - at £5 over the counter, or £6 (including p&p) for mail order sales. Cheques should be payable to 'Lancashire County Council'.

With regards to Caballo's letter it says the missive was sent to the Secretary of State with an endorsement from the palace.

I am so chuffed that words fail me!! Ordering book today, and will try to get to the museum in the New Year!

Re: Lancaster Roman Cavalryman - Caballo - 01-19-2008

Received the book today, and it is superb- the best £5 I have spent in a long time. Not just a book on the Lancaster tombstone, but a well illustrated book on it and other Reiter (cavalry) tombstones and a great illustration by Graham Sumner. Very strongly recommended.

Re: Lancaster Roman Cavalryman - John Conyard - 01-20-2008

I'm sending my cheque off today.

That's to all for bringing it to my attention.
