Rhaphanaea / Raphanaea - Jona Lendering - 11-08-2007

Does anyone know the modern, Arabic name of the legionary base Raphanaea in Syria?

Rafniye?

Thanks, sounds plausible, but where's that on the map? I've a pretty good map and know where it ought to be more or less - but where is it exactly?

Yes, that is more or less what I know. The trouble is that I cannot spot the modern village on a modern map...

From a roman coins site:

It seems at: 32°54' N, 36° 10' E

sometimes called Rafniyef too.

Vale,
