4th/5th century roman women\'s dress - Et tu brute - 09-11-2007
Hi everyone,
with me getting into re-enactment and participating in my first show my Mam now has an intrest and is trying to find out a bit about late Roman womens dress, however this is proving to be harder than we expected so if anyone has any infomation it would be most welcome

Also, if anyone has a simple sewing pattern of a ladies tunic of that era (or know where I can find one), it would be much appreciated. I don't have a sewing machine, but I should be able to sew it by hand.

Try looking under Coptic rather than Roman. A slightly misleading term but it is what the Late Roman garments found in Egypt will normally be called. The most common type of garment is a tunic for both men and women called the Dalmatic of which a number of examples exist. There are also a number of accessories such as bonnets which are found,. Unfortunately these are more likely to appear in exhibition catalogues rather than on any site on the net. So I suggest you go to any exhibitions of Coptic textiles when they appear in local Museums or track down the catalogues some of which are available second hand. Oh and look for any books on Coptic textiles and late Roman art in particular the mosaics from Piazza Armerina. For an illustration of a late Roman cavalryman punished by Julian for cowardice I put him in a woman's dress based on the PA mosaic.

Wow, that's great Jeroen! Did you meet them at LOTR convention? I managed to meet Bruce Hopkins (Gamling), who was a very, very nice man. Tried to meet Craig Parker, but there were too many fangirls hounding him, lol.I think the two LOTR actors I would love to meet most are Viggo Mortenson, as he's an artist and I love his photography, and Christopher Lee -- the Master of Hammer Horror films.
Also Sean Bean ... but I would be incredibly nervous as I've had a crush on him since I as seventeen -- and he happened to play my favourite character in the books, Boromir!
Ok I'll stop, sorry for the LOTR mania. :lol:

yep, Ringcon in Germany. I've been there several times. Graig was always there (surrounded by women offcourse). John Rhys Davis, Bernard Hill and Andy Serkis were also fun to meet.
Meeting Christopher Lee was... awe-inspiring.
