Salve!

What is the purpose of these wrist-handguards? Is is something for a gladiator? I never saw any evidence for a Roman soldier wearing such a think (except if you call a hollywood movie evidence)...

Nice leatherwork though!

Vale,

Very nice work, they look like they'd make an excellent archery bracer.

Salve,

I have only seen the manica (segmented arm guard) made from metal; although that does not mean leather ones didn’t exist.

Is this based on a find, a fresco, or sculpture?

Either way, the leather work extraordinarily well done… laudes!

There is no evidence in the world of the roman army but there sare many in the world of the gladiators and it's very useful for the protection of the hand which wear the scutum. All the soldiers of the VIII augusta wear one or two.

Re: manica - Matthew Amt - 08-24-2007

Doesn't the *scutum* protect the hand which holds it? There really is no evidence for the use of leather armguards like this by legionaries (gladiators I know less about!). Such things are completely forbidden in Legio XX, and always have been.

It IS nice leatherwork, though!

Valete,

Matthew

I think a trained legionary would be immune to the discomfort a lot of reenactors experience while holding a scutum.

IMHO, if you want something to protect your hand from the scutum strain, attach a piece of padding or just a scrap of sheepskin to the handopening and on the upper edge of the opening.

Vale,

Or they simply didn't experience that discomfort at all because of some subtle difference in how their shields were constructed?

I've never had my hand rubbed by my shield! So I'm never sure what all the fuss is about. Maybe my hand is just more authentic than everyone else's? Hee hee hee...
