Referencing other posts - D B Campbell - 08-18-2007 Tonight's silly question is ... Can anyone explain to me how you reference an earlier post? (i.e. create a link to it) I know how to link to another thread, but I've seen people link directly to other users' contributions. Each post appears to have a unique number (which is probably the key to this). How can you identify that number? Re: Referencing other posts - Jona Lendering - 08-18-2007 Questions can never be silly - only refusing to ask questions is silly (says grandpa). The answer is: you add "&start=NN" to the link, in which NN is a number. For example, "my" New at Livius-thread has URL link from old RAT; if I add "&start=213", you get link from old RAT one of your latest postings in that thread. I hope this helps. Re: Referencing other posts - Praefectusclassis - 08-18-2007 It's actually even easier. See the little note next to "Posted: dd MM yyyy hh:mm Post subject"? (top left of every post) The link under it represents the actual post number. If you right click that and click properties (or click: copy location), or just hover the mouse over it, you'll copy/see it. The link to a specific post is then http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?p=postnumber . If I wanted to reference your post at the top of this thread, it's http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?p=154438 Re: Referencing other posts - Martin Moser - 08-19-2007 That's good to know, many thanks! When I right-click to see the properties of my opening post in this thread, I get: "http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?t=17980". And when I do the same to your reply, Jasper ... I get the same number (17980)! :? (Maybe it's an AOL thing. I'll look for a work-around solution!) Re: Referencing other posts - Praefectusclassis - 08-19-2007 Duncan, you're probably not clicking in the right place. It's on the same line as the poster's name, and to the right, left of 'Posted...'. Re: Referencing other posts - D B Campbell - 08-19-2007 Quote:It's on the same line as the poster's name, and to the right, left of 'Posted...'.Aha! I think it's an AOL thing -- the post number appears if I hover over the wee icon. (Properties only gives me the icon's properties: http://www.romanarmy.com/rat/templates/subSilver/images/icon_minipost.gif !) We got there in the end -- Thanks! Re: Referencing other posts - Praefectusclassis - 08-19-2007 Well, there you go, using a big giant corporation browser... (not that not about 70% here user Microsoft IE) Re: Referencing other posts - Tarbicus - 08-19-2007 I usually just click on the post icon, go to the new page that starts at that post, and copy its URL. |
