chaeronea\'s Lion - spyros - 08-08-2007

Back from vacations. Didn't do much but there is something I would like to share with you all. A couple of shots of the Charonia's Lion. A monument commemorating the theban losses during that battle.

It's quite something to be in that plain near the river imaging it all. The last stand of the sacred band supposedly is exactly were the lion stands just beside the river.
The lovely lady standing by the monument for comparison is my wife.
Ok this last picture is OT but I couldn't ressist. Syfnos, I love this island.

Phew! Didn't realize that it was that tall. Did you get to see the battlefield on August 2nd by any chance? :lol:
I think that Syfnos will have to be a future vacation destination 8)

It would be great if it was the 2nd of August but no such luck. The plain of the battle is pretty much the same in appearance as it was then. the only significant settlement is the village of Chaeronea's. Next time I'll take some pictures of the surrounding area. From the road is very easy to imagine where Phillip's army would stand facing the confederates

IMHO Chaeronea is one of the most significants battles of the greek world. Greece was forced to unite in this battlefield. The conguest of Persia, Hellenistic culture and the Greco-Roman world until the Fall of Byzantium, I know that I may going too far, but IMHO they were born in this plain.
