Indeed, Gaius, you need not make up a story like that to justify you wearing such a belt in that period. It's absolutely authentic. In the article about the pre Flavian belt I saw type A plates dated to the Flavian period, whereas a lot of well known type B plates are dated to the Claudian period. So the least you can say is that the two beltstyles overlapped chronologicaly.

I've yet to do it, but apparently cold enamel (black) can be a good imitation of niello if steamed during its curing process, by turning it to a matt finish. There's a thread on the subject where I linked to a PDF on working with cold enamel. Peronis started the thread, IIRC.
