Because of the chance of getting a hug or because if you didn't you would be lynched by your fellow-Londoners?

Re: World Cup - Tarbicus - 06-02-2006

My regular's a Dutch pub. I get lynched anyway.

There are some new pictures added, and you may now start to feel some sympathy with poor Jasper, Robert, and me. The only way we can go across the streets unnoticed, is by wearing orange carrots on our heads.

To understand how we are suffering without hope, just take a careful look at the photos of the male supporters of the Dutch soccer team. Do you notice something strange? Except for the orange wigs, lion tale trousers, and Wehrmacht helmets, that is.

Yes: some of those men have rings. The men with the orange bra's and painted faces are actually married. Just imagine: there's a lady standing in the church next to one of those men, and she says "yes", and she thinks "this man is the one for me".

Poor Holland. Mens sana qui mal y pense.

Well, I understand, but cannot agree. Probably you'd be saved from all the madness, but the rest of us would be deprived from the possibility to see some fantastic football. It's always a pleasure to see your footballers in action, with their attacking style of play, their skills and creativity. I hope The Netherlands together with Argentina will make it from the group C and continue in the tournament.
Greetings
Alexandr

Re: World Cup - Tarbicus - 06-10-2006

It's all a good giggle, and there's nothing wrong with making a show of yourself in public. For example; people in Holland who don't paint their faces orange and look normal instead

I remember Euro'96 in Liverpool, where a number of the matches were played. There was an influx of foreign supporters and it was actually a great chance to meet lots of different nationalities all with a common interest. One Friday night I and some friends were stood outside a bar on one of the main streets which is lined with other bars (it is Liverpool after all), and one of the underdog teams had just won a match, I forget which but Romania springs to mind. As it was Friday it was incredibly busy with everyone winding down after the week. Later on the foreign team's supporters (sheepishly) paraded up the same street in a quiet celebration, flags and all, and all the people from the bars came out and gave them a round of applause and cheers as they walked up the street.

It can turn nasty with the 1% of dickheads, but 99% love it for the good things it can bring.

Re: World Cup - tlclark - 06-10-2006

Ok, here's where I make enemies of half the people on this board.

From the land where the world's biggest sport is called "soccer" and armored behemoths with the mass of a killer whale play "football".

GO ENGLAND!!

Supporting USA is like picking the ugly girl at the dance. It'a a pity vote.

Sorry, but it's true.

BTW, did anyone see "Bend it like Beckham" Charming movie that explains why football can be the most beautiful game on the world. [url:2c9zih0p]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286499/[/url]

Re: World Cup - D B Campbell - 06-10-2006

Our First Minister has suggested (scroll down to World Cup) that Scots should support Trinidad or Angola!

I expect he's supporting Paraguay this afternoon.

Wonderful movie!!!

Yeah, if soccer players all looked like Keira Knightley, it would definitely be a more popular sport here in America.

Re: World Cup - Cornelius Quintus - 06-10-2006

Ave Omnes,

I'm with the Italian pediludum team.
They will win with ancient tactics by taking the pedifollis in the middle, form a testudo around and walking slowly but unbeaten across the goal line...

Re: World Cup - Tarbicus - 06-11-2006

Once he's fit, we'll just send Shrek in to sort that testudo out.

As for the ref yesterday, biased? Who? As if? Of course they were booking offences, and Paraguay were positively angelic.

Poor match. We've got problems, but thankfully our usual nemesis, Sweden, didn't score at all, although I thought they played well.

Sour. He'll be suggesting complete independence next.
