It was just a joke. Confusedmile:

By this time-period, these so-called "Scythians" had been living at the borders of the Empire for 2 1/2 centuries. Most likely the controlling Tyrfingi nobles-- Athanaric, Alaviv, and Fritegern: ie the Balths-- were probably bilingual, some of them perhaps trilingual. As for wearing furs? Judging from the archaeological record, we find sophisticated clothing, Gothic cloisonné brooches and swords ( copied throughout Europe into the 7th century) plus grooming accouterments. They had a significant number of churches, enough for Athanaric to burn with impunity, including the churches' ministry and laity.

However, if Hollywood ever did a movie about this period of history, the film's producers would make sure that historicity was tossed aside for the "correct barbarian look." :dizzy:
