Re: Trip to Greece - Susanne - 05-14-2008

Frape is a real experience for the tastes. It was like drinking a cup-load of a soil sample mixed with water...

Don't miss the War Museum! It displays Greece's war history arranged in a chronological line from the stone age (yes, STONE AGE), to the 1900s.

The Archaeological Museum is a MUST DO!!! And KERAMEIKOS (but don't take the blue subway line to the station Kerameikos, you'll end up in some restaurant block somewhere in Gazi... and the throw-in people won't let go; take the green line to Thissios - it halts just above the Kerameikos with its lovely surrounding park - but again, be aware of annoying vendors, especially on sundays.).

And... The ZEUS TEMPLE (and its adjacent Hadrianus Gate)!

A question about the parthenon, how did it look with the restoration. I heard that's supposed to finish this year from a travel guide.

Re: Trip to Greece - Susanne - 05-15-2008

There wasn't much to see actually. Only loads of scaffolds, still.

Re: Trip to Greece - Gaius Julius Caesar - 05-15-2008

Stomach problems? I only had a very small issue with that once the entire month (well, 2 x 2 week holidays) I was there, and I only ate local cuisine....just not every thing on the menu!!

Well, it's full of ... metal. The restoration is still being made.
I didn't like much the greek wine (but actually i don't like either the must famous portuguese wines, the oporto and madeira, so i'm not a very good example).

Ok, eating in the tourist restirants near Acropoli is a bad idea. They are expesnsive. ButI guess tourist are shops are like that in every place of the world.
Well Fabiano if you dont like one we make good beers too.

Kind regards

Re: Trip to Greece - taira1180 - 05-16-2008

So for next time, i will try the beers. And hopefully, i will have time to see more things!

Re: Trip to Greece - Susanne - 05-16-2008

Athens doesn't have alot of beers, actually. But they are nice. Smile

Re: Trip to Greece - taira1180 - 07-11-2008

So i am returning to Greece. This time i will stay in Athens 4 days. And i won't commit the same mistakes!

Re: Trip to Greece - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-11-2008

There is a actually a small bar just down the hill from the Akropolis Metro station that serves a good variety of good wines and beers.....the barmaid was a dead ringer for one of the Kouros in the Akropolis museum.... :o

The best food I had was of course when I went to eat at restaurants my reletives took me to, or at t their place.!! 8)

Re: Trip to Greece - taira1180 - 07-11-2008

I am interested to know if there is a good book store... with books in english.

Re: Trip to Greece - Gaius Julius Caesar - 07-11-2008

There is one not far from Syntagma Square, IIRC, just past the big hotel
used as the HQ during the Nazi occupation. I believe it has books in English and Greek....

Re: Trip to Greece - taira1180 - 07-11-2008

Thanks! Big Grin

Re: Trip to Greece - hoplite14gr - 07-11-2008

The cafe at the entrance of National Museum has Greek beers from a small producer named "Craft". Despite the name they are made in Greece and they are excellent. If you are lucky and they have it try the "smoked" beer.
You can eat cheaply where you see SOUVLAKI of PSISTARIA.

Bookstores in Panepistimioy (centrla street in Athens) have books in English

Kind regards

Re: Trip to Greece - taira1180 - 07-21-2008

So i'm back! I have visited the national archeaological museum, the byzantine and the military museum. I eated again a couple of times in Plaka, and the rest of the time in cheaper places. In one of the days, there was a terrible heat, and i didn't notice the heartquake.
I have take several photos and i wil post them in my blog latter. Unfortunely, my wife won't have any congress there next year, only in Belgium and the Holand.
