Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Tarbicus - 09-17-2007 I found these in my copy of Lewis's Elementary Latin Dictionary; 2. consero, serui, sertum, ere, to connect, entwine, join, fit, bind, unite: Lorica conserta hamis, V.: Consertum tegumen spinis, pinned together,... hamus, i, m., a hook: ferrae, Cs.: Lorica conserta hamis, of network, V. Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Taoye - 09-18-2007 I have a question... how exactly is the round metal pieces that the hooks attach to, attached to the hamata? ie: center of the chest, and on each of the shoulder doublings. I think most people rivet them to a small back plate. Makes perfect sense. Do you leave a ring out to make a hole for it, or does it get riveted through one of the rings? Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Peroni - 09-18-2007 That all depends on the size of rivet shank you use and the diameter of the mail rings. I generally remove a ring. Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - MARCVS PETRONIVS MAIVS - 09-18-2007 I would also like to hijack my own thread and ask more questions (avoids opening a new topic); Concerning the Lorica Segmentata, what is the difference between the ''Kalkriesse'' and ''Corbidge'' types, and what is the ''Corbridge A, B and C'' i've heard about? Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Tarbicus - 09-18-2007 http://www.loricasegmentata.org/ to start with. http://www.larp.com/legioxx/lorica.html to follow with. Especially the mystic ''Alba lulia'' type. I wonder what discoveries they will make in the next 20 years ? Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Caius Marius - 09-24-2007 Can anyone share with me the various weight differences there are (if any) between the different Inner Diameter sized Lorica Hamata? i.e. 8mm vs 6mm vs 4mm. Reason I ask is, having worn a Hauberk a few years back for a 10th century varangian guard impression I know that chain has a pretty good weight to it and would like to go as light-weight as possible while staying as close to or being as authentic as possible. Thanks in advance  Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Peroni - 09-24-2007 All depends on the gauge of the wire used. I have a 20ga 6mm punched and riveted shirt that weighs in at just 6.5 kg, yet the same shirt in 18ga wire weighs 8.5kg! Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - MARCVS PETRONIVS MAIVS - 09-24-2007 Quote:All depends on the gauge of the wire used. And which one of these was used by the romans? 20ga or 18ga? Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Dan Howard - 09-25-2007 The Romans used all types. You can't really generalise too much. All you can do is pick a specific extant example and make a replica. If you don't want to get that exacting then anything you do will be fine for what you want it for. Re: Questions on the Lorica Hamata - Caius Marius - 09-25-2007 Trying to remember....1kg is approx 2.5lbs? (we are still backwards here in the states when it comes to weights and measures it seems  ) So if thats the case then somewhere between 20-30lbs as a guess...Looks like I'd need to pay attention to the gauge as well as the ring diameter. Thanks again! |
