Well having just watched my first world cup, as a neophyte I suggest the following reasons why it hasn't caught on in America.
1.) No beer commercials
2.) We already have a venue for recognizing such acheivement...It's called the oscars.
Actually, after the first fifteen minutes the refs stopped paying attention to the floppers and things got a lot better. BTW - What other sport gives medals to the refs!! Giving the refs a stiff kick would improve ratings.
Congratulations to the Italians who deserved it on defense alone. I think they got robbed on two accounts. Lame penatly call cost them early and the offsides call looked specious to the American commenatators. Barring another camera angle it looked good to me. That spectacular save the goalie made mid game was incredible. I couldn't even see a ball moving that fast let alone deflect it. The Italians always seem to run out of gas near the end. The French were relentless though out of luck.
Great game. No mass substitutions. No endless benches. No long time outs, no commercial time-outs. Just guys running their hearts out for 2 hours. My dad thought it was anti-climatic to end on a pk shoot-out but Americans don't feel that way about Hockey so I don't understand the objection.
What a pity for Zidane to end his career that way. What pissed him off so much?
What a fabulous game. The only thing missing was the expression on Zidane's face in the locker room when the Italians won it.

Well I like Zidane and his play, but I absolutely don't understand his deed. And I have no excuse for him. After all the years he must be used to every kind of possible provocation.

Cristiano Ronaldo comes to mind, he is really a specialist of "stumbling". But he is in no way the only one. Referees should be much stricter in judging these "jumps".

Glad although too much noise was made last night, at least until 4 am. I feel lousy this morning not having slept enough.
Lousy but happy. Sweet to beat the french after the deeper pleasure of beating the germans. The Italians always make me suffer though. I am actually beginning to like Lippi ("Paul Newman"). I kind of detested the guy but really do think he did a very good job. I do believe the italians played well in this tournament as back home there is a soccer scandal blossoming and many of these new world champs probably wanted to show how much they were worth before their teams are sentenced to play next year in lower leagues. I was pleased to see they didn't loose their nerve (several smiles during the game! and no mistakes during penaltly kicks). I think the early-in-the-game french penalty game ruined the match. Zidane? Even a great man can behave like a great jerk. I am curious to read frech headlines and see how many will justify him. Ah la grandeur....

The Italians had enough chances against Germany to deserve a goal - too bad it came so late and as a shock. And the Germans played well, too; I think it was the best match in the tournament.
There are so many Italians living here that Germany pretty much was azzurro territory last night.
