Full Version: Round smaller style shields for Roman recreation

Salve,

Is there any evidence that round smaller style shields were used by the Romans in the late Republican to early Imperial times?

Would a shield, such as the one below, be acceptable for recreation? Could it be used with an officer’s impression in Recreation?

Obviously, all the ‘ageing’ & ‘antiquing’ would be redone, the shield would look bright and painted vibrantly but… can it be used in recreation?

Opinions?

The images on this shield are much influenced by romantic time (18th/19th century). On the background you can see a middle-aged castle, …...

I think a bad choice for any roman impression – unfortunately. Sad
Crude! You're correct; I brightened up the image... I now can see the castle in the background too.

Valentine Armouries [url:hsip870r]http://www.varmouries.com[/url] has it for $150 plus 20% off this week only! At first glance that really looked like a Roman Equestrian solder with a crest also!

Oh well.
Never mind, go Late Roman and revel in your small round shield. Smile

Er, you may need to add a horse to your impression but that's a small price to pay ...
