Salve,

I was wondering what kind of sword you all think would be suitable for a Tribunus Laticlavus to be worn into battle? The time period is the second half of the 1st century AD.


A fancy pompei gladius? A parazonium? Something classical like a hoplite sword?

(Is there something on the market that is suitable for such an impression?)

Maybe a spatha, since they'd be mounted? But a really nice one...

Do you have a picture of that parazonium? I'm looking for pictures of replicas of them.

i would like to show to you this parazonium but(i don't know wy)for me is impossible do attachment of photo in this forum.I have only 1mb and in others topics I used...I tink that is a few strange and not intelligent rule..but...is like that.

I actually meant where did you purchase if from or who has it for sale?

I've only been able to find the non-eagle handle version from MR (which rather blows)... this one looks far better although I would most likely remake the scabbard.

I'm looking to replace the handle on my mainz gladius with an eagles head but, I would like to add a parazonium in place of my pugio... that would be a better fit for my officer's impression.

Thanks Jim, I had missed the thread about that chape. It's a very good option!

Some greek swordguards that look a lot like the one this statue's parazonium have also been found. So those two pieces could be used on a scabbard. It would be great to be able to fit one together out of archeological finds.

I wonder if the scabbard would be just plain leather or metal enchased. Or with a continious side guttering...

I think, based on the chape with loose guttering, it would have continuous guttering, but others might disagree with that.

I was thinking exactly the same. I'm going to look into this a bit. I do like the eagle handles though...

I also wonder why a high officer would go for a scabbard less ornate than a lot of common soldiers. Purely for symbolic and traditional reasons?

Anyways... this SCA dagger appears to be close to the right shape and length... if you're into fabrication, the handle could be removed (or ground down) and replaced with an eagle head. Then the existing scabbard could be used as a ‘base’ and reworked into a Roman one... for $40.00 US, it might be worth a try!

I must agree with PierPaolo, that a tribune would have a parasonium. This is the kind of weapon that most of the Patrician class, and indeed the Equestrian would have carried. It was a situation where these ranks would have directed a battle not taken part in it, only if push had come to shove.
