I couldn't find a website online, but surely there is a reenactment group of women who dress up as Amazons, isn't there? Somewhere?

How much is known about the armor and equipment of the Amazons? Could I (theoretically, I have no money) assemble a kit?

Athena
Athena,

The nearest I think you'll get is female gladiatorial re-enactment.

Here's some info. (the group is based in the UK but I'm sure there'll be similar in the US) http://www.ludus.org.uk/r/essaywomen.html

If your lovely avatar is any indicator.. I'm certain I speak for many board members in saying that we would LOVE to see you in your amazon kit!
Purely for the sake of historical enquiry of course
Of course, we have to be certain of authenticity don't we?
I would not wish to be thought of as a dirty old man........

Well Athena
you can check the women of the Skythians
in the "allies and enemies" section
Since the Amazons are disputed on their existance,
you can also check Greek Warrior women in the Greek section.
The trouble is that though the guerilla light infantry female
units are documented, heavy infantry action is questionable.
Enjoy your research.

Kind regards
Athena

You might try to read Book XI, of the Aeneid, by Virgil. I believe the title is “Debaters and the warrior girlâ€
Oh my good heavens.
Some of you guys don't get out much, do you.

Edge
Edge,

I am hoping to get out in the next year or two, with good behaviour

Thanks! I am really quite skinny (runners, ya know :? ? ?

Still, I am sorry that there aren't more women reenactment groups. I find this surprising, as when I was small it was me and the girls who played dress up, not the boys.

Thanks for the links! The information about the female gladiators was interesting and I must say, strange. Not that I am not about equality and all that, but when I tried Karate for a couple weeks I learned very quickly that I have no hope of fighting off anyone. Pepper spray is your friend...

Athena
Athena people with weapons were the martial artists lords.
That no accident you know,

Barry is lucky he is getting out-I got a life sentence
Athena,don't be discouraged.Most of us don't look like Romans,either
but we enjoy the spirit of it anyway. The actress above who played Conan's muse(Sandahl Bergman)was quite lean,a professional dancer.
You don't see many warriors who were overweight.Maybe you could start your own Amazon group.Sounds perfect for the Greek festival.
