I recently visited the beautiful Island of Maderia. Not much in the way of ancient history is an understatement! However...

Whilst my wife and I were touring one of the many tropical gardens, we came accross a statue obviously 'collected' on someones 'Grand Tour' a century or so ago. Headless and legless it may be, but it has a nice musculata and finely detailed pteruges.

The chest decoration is a pair of griffons with what appeared to be a gorgon head at the neck of the cuirass. The first two layers of pteruges are scallop shaped and decorated in a shell-like pattern. The lower pteruges are the typical (linen?) strips with counter-twisting fringes. The upper pteruges at the sleeves are in what appeared to be two layers with a tunic beneath.

Here's the photos..
