Anyone know where i might find this item(replica) or parts to make same?
I have been kicking around the idea of a 5thC Scythian. Hardest bits to find seem to be the side arms.Have bow ,gorytos etc. Even have the horse :lol:
Any help to a newbie would be most appreciated.

Keep in mind that if you plan to reenact something more than light horse you might need a longer blade. Skythian designs existed but also a "captured" long bladed Greek sword would do.

Thanks for the help guys. Light horse/archer is where I would like to take this.
Saw a pic in Osprey of archer wearing "captured" Greek linen amour,is that correct?
Rainer thats just what I'm looking for. Did you make it or have it commissioned? Of course a long Greek bronze blade would be nice.
Trying to convince the wife may be tough though.

yes it is true..... the Scythians did use the lineothorax and sometimes they used captured helmets. They used to cut the cheeks and nasal out of corinthians and just use the bowl!!! Mad!! Some of the guys in our group that do Scythian wear the lineothorax.

Jon your possibilities are endless and as modern reanctor are limited only by your funds.

Heavy Skythian cavalry could wear corinthian helmet, linothorax and "anaxyridae"-skins reinforced with scales covering the legs.
The Greek equipment could be either looted or traded because many Northern Greek colonies hired Skythians.
Athenians maintained a "mameluk-like" Skythian unit of horse archers doubling as policemen! So linothorax is a valid option.

The weapons could range from dagger to longswords Skythic or Greek.
But the deadlier was the saggaris. A pick-axe that could penetrate helmets. Most illustrations show one.

Cretan archers used closed helmets so archery with a closed helm is not a trouble. Do not destroy a helemet only on speculation.
Snow tiger or snow lepard caps are also an option.

He is more familiar to the bronze age, but makes some more things.

Thanks for the link.
As someone else mentioned my options seem only limited by my bank account. Maybe will have to sell one of the wife's horses on the QT.
I think this is going to be a long term project. Getting a piece of kit here and there. Then finding a group I can go "play" with.

Well done Jon.
You got picture of the pick-axe. It was probably a king's weapon-Not ceremonial as scholars like to say. Skythians loved to display their wealth.
The cavalryman is a Skythian noble with a Corinthian helmet not a Greek.
The "anxyriadae" are visible and the artifact has been used as a source for Skythian heavy cavalry reconstructions.

Panther at pic. 15 is interesting. Some sources say that Saka had caps made from snow leopard skin.

Be careful with the "tatoo crowd". I advice you to check the threads "Buttered Skythians" in the Greek Section and other Skythian related links here.

Be sure to get good price for the lady's horse because if she gets upset she might try to reenact a "Skythian headhunting girl" :lol:
