Umm I assume you mean Thera, why call it Atlantis?

Let's all a deep breath and say allegory (honestly the National Geographic should know better), produced by one of the classical world’s truly brilliant minds; fiction is not the sole invention of the modern world. In passing why is nobody running around trying to find the real basis for the ring of Gyges or trying to find the historical nugget behind the story?
Maybe Plato had heard of some big explosion (or severals) and used the idea. Don't forget that his atlantis is the symbol of a powerful society.
The peoples of the sea were Greeks so were the "Philistines" and this explains alot of their migration(minoan,mycenean,thera...) and their attacks on the mediterannean coasts after the Theran explosions.Compare Plato to the old testament where the god of israel promises to remove the Cretans(philistines) and throw them to the sea.
The volcano of Thera, still thought to be active (last explosion in 1951) was the only one that is most known.
Actually most Cyclades islands are vocanoes and perhaps in was not only Thera that exploded but a number of them-if not at the same time then in quick succession
Kind regards
Greetings,
I read somewhere yesterday, that Atlantis was thought to be Ireland...and the part that sank was the Dogger Bank.
I had not heard of this theory before....
AtlantisInIreland
However, I would definitely go with Minoans travelling to America........hasn't anybody noticed the resemblance between some of their outfits and artwork and that of the pre Columbian South Americans....?

Quote:Strange one of these group, the Aztec I think, have this word in their vocabulary: alt, atl, chitlan etc.
wich mean stone & other things...

Atl seems to mean water.....
Nahuatl, is the language of the Azteca Mexica, belonging to the Uto-Aztecan-linguistic group.
naui: 4, for counting thin and flat objects;
nauatl, nahuatl: what sounds good, what gives a good sound; the Mexican language.
nauatlaca, nahuatlaca: Mexican tribes who left Aztlán, and who fixed their homes in the Anahuac region, "near the water".
Atl is "water", and nahuac means "by or near".

Nauatlaca, nahuatlaca.....is recognisable as nautical....!

According to their legends, the original homeland of the Aztec was known as Aztlán ....hmmmh! The name supposedly means The land of Herons....and they left this place in the 11th century ce. It seems to be situated in North America and is an island or surrounded by water...but where did the name originally come from....I wonder?
info from here

Erm... Maybe this would be better placed in the OT section?
Quote:Erm... Maybe this would be better placed in the OT section?

The reason I put it here was because the eruption took place in modern Greece. Sorry, if I misplaced it.

Theo
No, it was placed alright but now we seem to be venturing into Aztecs and Atlantis-anywhere-in-the-world theories. But I'll keep an eye on it for now.

How about discussing the theory about Atlantis in the Aegean? Sure, Thera is the main candidate, but was the story about Atlantis also a duplicate of the civilization on Thera? Was Thera really Atlantis? Or was the disaster just borrowed for the story?
Greetings Vorti,
sorry
It was trying to connect the Minoans and Aztecs that took it off topic (the thread that is) and Ireland does have connections with the Aegean as it was supposed to have been settled by a Hellenic race at one time...!
Right, Thera...looking at the picture and imagining this, as it must have originally looked, a circle surrounding a lake, with an island in the centre???....hmmmh
From the viewpoints of the Tsunamis and ash that must have hit Crete and the fact that the Minoans were a very advanced and sea trading people, very much like the Atlanteans - yes, there is an element of truth in this being the basis of the story.
Have there been any underwater archaelogical finds in the area?
It seems that a nearby island called Anaphi was covered in ash 10 feet deep from this eruption....According to Mythology the island was named Anaphi because it emerged from the depths of the sea to offer refuge and save the Argonauts from a fierce storm. The same event?
A few photos of the area on here....Thera
Akrotiri on Thera the settlement with the hot and cold piped water and toilets....Akrotiri

The picture you refer to isn't intended as a representation of Atlantis or Akrotiri, it's Tenochtitlan, I believe.
