Although I'm not sure of where this example comes from, below Germanicus is addressing Emperor Tiberius and holding a small round shield.

Does anyone know what type of shield is he carrying? It has a vertical grip offset to one side and appears to have first vertical bar that the arm goes through. I’ve never seen this type of shield used in Recreation of the early Emperor period.

Also, does anyone know if this image is from antiquity? Or was it perhaps created and overly embellished in the 1800’s or something?

To me it seems to be a greek shield. An apsis? Goes with the rest of his hellenistic kit.

... a little late, I know, but your Parmae are beautiful,and display superb artistic skill ( even to reproducing Roman'style' which is hard to do, as I know from personal experience !! ).

Most of the parmae I've seen are edged with plain leather. Would it be appropriate to use copper alloy edging instead?

No, we don't. We're waiting for the draco to be finished. With only two members, another pole to carry around would be a bit much.. But in future we'll certainly look into it. Why? Do you know someone who can make us one?

Well, you get a mommy vexelaria and a daddy vexelarius, a moonlit night with a nice breeze, some soft music, a beach blanket and ----

I think copper-alloy would definitely be a possibility. Personally I doubt that leather (as opposed to rawhide) would ever have been used for shield edgings. Its just not tough enough to stop a blade splitting the wood.
