On a similar subject - whilst scruffing around the net I found this pic of some miniature figures:

Which looks like it's based on a painting from an Osprey book or similar. Can anyone identify what the original picture might have been, and where it can be found?

It has some similarities to an Angus McBride painting in "Imperial Rome at War" Sorry I do not have a scanner to show you the image. It is on page 33 and it is titled "Cavalry on the Upper German frontier. c230 AD".
There are diffrences, but that was undoubtedly the inspiration.

An erratum - in the vambraces thread I mentioned that 'Warfare in the Classical World' was the only book by John Warry - actually he seems to have illustrated several, although none Roman. WitCW is a bit of a must-have, I reckon:

yes, I knew that picture, although Robert is right that it is somewhat 'hollywoodesque' I like the dark atmosphere that is caught in this painting. On the other hand, I don't really like pictures of the great city's downfall ... Another example:

Another question: Nathan gave a reference to Warry's 'Warfare in the Ancient World'. The cover shows what looks like a repainting of the famous Alexander mosaic from Pompeii. Does anybody here have a larger depiction of this repainting or an Internet reference?
