I see many of you saw my posting, "Advance Australia!" but, since I've had no replies, I thought I'd better make sure everyone got the message. Athanasios Porporis, of the Ancient Hoplitikon of Melbourne, intends to come, with other aussie Re-enactors. So that's it, folks, we've got representatives coming from all over the world! The more, the merrier, say I!
Aussies with "Greek Colonists" included!! Big Grin
Kind regards

Yep! I said I was calling to the Diaspora. Do you think any of the Greek national newspapers might publish the "Hellenes!" document you translated?
Khairete,
no, I haven''t seen the other post yet...
I think this event will make the national press.....Hoplite invasion of England....!!!!

It seems the picture has too many pixels. Gnashing of teeth! Still, I've posted it on the website at [url:3rups45x]http://www.webspawner.com/users/ancientgreekfestiva/index.html[/url], so you can see it there. It's worth a look. ( "Coorr! Look at the bell cuirass on that!")
I don't see any pic there that has too many pixels. Which one is it Paul?
Khairete,
they look very menacing......I do like the hoplon designs..!
I just read that Socrates was a Hoplite too....didn't know that :?

Socrates as a hoplite is mentioned in the fight at Delion.
In ancient Greece if you wanted political rights you had to do military service.
Depending on your finances you enlisted either as a trireme captain (filthy rich), horseman (rich), hoplite (dependable middle class), peltast-psilos (working class).
A doulos (intenured servant) offering his services as psilos could win his freedom even in Sparta!
All famous ancient Greeks had certainly done some form of military service.
The image is an atempted reconstruction of the Spartan counterattack in Platea based heavily on Plutarchos LAKONIKA.
The king is curring the solar synbol of Lakonia, his bodyguards are Olympic champions hense the "Kotinos" on their helmets. Olympic winners had the priviledge to fight at the side of the king and bear the DIOSKOYRI emblem.
The Amyklean hoplite, destinguished by the roosters, has two on his shield to show alegiance to both Spartan royal families. Next the Gorgonion of Chalkioikos Athena of Sparta is visible. The hawk of Skiritis is visible in the second line. The "Pitanates lochos" following the king has not his marking identified yet. Any hoplites related to indigenous families would have black snakes on their shoulder guards.

I'm sorry, the picture I was talking about is IN ADDITION TO the Nikos Panos painting on the title page; it's on page two of the website and it's a photo of the Ancient Hoplitikon of Melbourne doing a show. That's the one the computer told me had too many pixels to post here.
Traverce crest ascociated with officer status based on pottery evidence.
The Kentauros of IOLKOS, the Triskelis of the Akmeonides and the Chalkoikos Athena Gorgonion. I just couldn´t resist!
Kind regards
