"Gerard Butler will star in Warner Bros adaptation of 300, a graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City) that recounts one of ancient Greece's best-known military battles.
Warner, returning to the sword-and-sandal action-adventure genre that yielded blockbuster results at the global box office with Troy but more mixed fortunes with Alexander, plans to begin principal photography in Montreal on Oct 17. The studio will distribute 300 worldwide.
Zack Snyder, who recently remade George A Romero?s seminal zombie picture Dawn Of The Dead, will direct.
300 is the true story of how an elite unit of Spartan warriors thwarted the massive Persian army at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. Butler will play the Spartan king Leonidas as he takes on the Persian god-king? Xerxes.
In Miller's blood-spattered interpretation the story culminates with Leonidas, riddled with arrows, exacting revenge on Xerxes with his final dying breath."
I became quite entranced with Gerard Butler when he played the starring role in the USA miniseries "Atilla". I also liked his turn as the time-traveling archaeologist in "Timeline". I just wish the story had been centered on him rather than the weaker character played by Paul Walker. I'm a little skeptical about the studio's statement that the production will feature "hyper-realistic sets" as depicted in the graphic novel but I'm still hopeful about the result.

Well, last time they used Richard Egan for the role of Leonidas - so why not?. I just hope Mr. Stoned doesn't get to direct this time. :evil:

Well, hold your horses. A friend auditioned for Leonidas' wife, Gorgo, who appeals to the Gerousia (!) to support Leonidas and then, when her appeal falls on deaf ears kills one of them with a knife!!! Sounds odd - I've got the Graphic novel and I don't remember that bit!! I thought I might go fo an audition myself just to get hold of the script.
Apparently Sienna Miller was down for the part but has withdrawn.
We shall see.

That's an exceptional graphic novel. I'm interested in seeing the adaptation.

Not sure about it,300 hunky blokes running around in almost what looks like a leather Jockstrap dont seem right to me.I think id burst out laughing at them!And the helmets look a bit too "Gladiator" for me.I shall reserve judgement till a bit later.

My first reaction when I saw Leonidas in his helm was....'Maximus in the Maximus' something about the eye area.....!
I certainly think the ladies in the audience will enjoy the Spartan version of the Chippendales..... :lol:

Frank Miller´s comic was great!. It was agreat hit here and was translated.
The film though following the images of the comic is not a good idea in my opinion. 300 "ekdromoi" holding Thermopylae...hmmm.....
I agree on your views on the helmets and Christina´s opinion on atracting female audiences.

Ambrosius, you probably mean the KRYPTEIA (secret groups) the Lakedemonian inteligence service more mean than KGB and Gestapo combined.
There is also a reference of a night raid in Xerxes camp by Plutarch if memory serves me right.
But I think I will agree with Andy -phalnx should better depicted like phalanx.
