In the Amphitheater of Trier the gladiators of Ars Dimicandi and others artists made a show.

Thanks for the pictures and the links. So did you think the event a succes? Where do you sleep, in the camp or elsewhere?

It is a little bit ambivalent. Having seen the show in the Arena in the evening, I was a little bit shocked...
But apart from that, we had loads of fun, nice neighbours, and a VERY interested audience. in regard of the latter, it was even better than in Xanten...
And yes, we sleep in our tents....

In my eyes it was a nice event, a lot of fun, bad weather the sunday.
But its not the quite most authentical ways. Some parts of the event are show, and anything more.
But its a nice way to start interest in people, so, yes i think it was a sucess.

We sleeped, as usual in camp in our tents. The weather wasnt that bad, that the water came through

But: i think the audience were quite similar, some were interested, some only wanted a show, and others just think of buying a souvenir.
In Xanten we had better weather, more romans, the buildings... just the karaoke evening in the tavern were...erm...you know what i mean.

I think organisers should be careful that 'Roman days' don't become a Hollywood-like 'Roman Show'. Maybe we should become very careful what to attend, and uphold standards?

That said, I forgot to ask if the Lusoria was there, too?

The gladiators weren't that bad, but the 'killed' one (IUGULA!!!) was led out of the arena with a black piece of cloth over his head. I first thought of some kind of artistic convention but later learned they had been forbidden to drag the 'dead' out of the arena because some kids had thought the guys would really die.

Fathers should be punished for bringing toddlers to the game !

Wild beasts from the jungle were promised, but the only one was a lazy python which looked like it was on tranquilizers.


The absence of XXII Primigenia was a sad thing (we love your beer!), but the pompa was still ok. The setting (Porta Nigra, Constantine's basilica and the baths) made up for the rather small number of participants.

BTW, greetings to Caius (Populares) and the II Herculia from Gaul.

I had my 4-year old son with me at Archeon last saturday, when a gladiator was killed with a lot of 'blood' being spilt. No problem, I explained it to him and he understood fine. Kids see so much more shocking things these days in children's television than we did at their age (I'm 41), they're not easily shocked. I remember crouching behind the sofa when Star Wars (classic series, B&W set) was on, and lately my son did not flinch when looking at the final battle in LOTR.

The organizers hesitated for such a long time that Dr. Konen finally decided to quit the plan. That a group of about a dozen people get their contract a week before the final event is already bad enough, but with a crew complement of probably up to 30 people you have to plan in advance for months.

Perhaps next year...

great moment the trier event. Everybody were cool and sympathic. Greating to the populares Vindelicenses. They are very cool, in night and camp fire! The gladiators show was very impressive but the "editor" was boring with the "Ave... Ave.... Ave..." in shot gun repetitions. No talk on the reenactement equipement of Ars dimicandi roman military but the galdiators fighting technics, the roman tactics and fencing were mostly interesting. Sunday we like the cavalry charge of time trotter on ours shields and javelins shots. Thank to to the late roamn project of the minervia! So, we have meet an american late roman soldier very sympathic. He show me pictures of his work. Very good. So an super event!

You were interested in coming to Archeon when I started planning that last year.
How did you intend to go to Trier? By road transport or rowing/towing?

Flavius Promotus, i guess, all get their contract that late, thats every year the same in trier. Dosnt make it better...just more planable.

Vortigern, they question the people after and while the event, and much of the kids werent happy about....in fact they were shocked from the first evening show. So they hand back to the "wandering dead" instead the pulled dead... i dont remember if they had this charun-actor again this year... last year i was afraid that they use his hammer...

The Charon! That would've scared them.. Last saturday the charon in Archeon threw his bit wooden hammer into the audience, by accident! :x It bet that would've shocked the Treveri even more!

Oh, did any of you take pictures at Archeon?

I don't know his name. He wore an Deurne replika Helmet...
