Thanks to a localizing tip from Rob, I found Dan's reference to red military tunics. It's in the Historia Augusta Divi Claudii (Claudius II Gothicus) XIV.5. It says that he received, among a host of other things "...tunicas russas militares annuas [duas]..." = Two red military tunics yearly.
