Since we had so much fun with that SCA website that Hibernicus pointed us to earlier on RAT, I thought I'd start a little something similar here.

Venicone, VSLM :-)
Cheers
Jenny

Jenny, you look very first century. If I were going to quibble, the palla looks a little small, but I'm not sure of the dimensions except that they're square.
Is the neck piece of the under tunica folded over the outside, or is that just exposed?
Can't see your shoes too well; did you make them? The jewelry looks good, glass?
I think the colors are very period; the outer tunica could be madder, which is pink-red, and if you mixed it with indigo that would be a lot like yours. (can you tell I've bought a bunch of natural dyes and don't know how to use them yet?) The green-grey palla is appropriate for natural dyes too. I haven't seen a purse like that before; where did you get the idea for it?

I need to find the photo of me with the short short tunic, where the boxers were showing..I think they had little dogs or something equally humiliating on them. Matt Amt was merciless.

Hey, can RAT image host again?

Edited by: Richsc at: 8/10/03 11:03 pm

Thanks for the comments, Rich.

Yes, if it were supposed to be a palla, the headcovering would be too small. The end would need to hang at least as long as my thighs and more likely down to calf length to look "classical." I was just aiming for a simple shoulder shawl. The weave on this material is very loose, almost gauzelike, and so it ventilates well.

I am wearing two layers, an under and an outer dress. The undertunic is exposed. Probably this should be corrected on my next effort!

I'll have to make some scans of the jewelry. The jewelry, like the leather purse, are conjectures based upon similarities to actual Roman jewelry and leathercrafts.

I looked over everything with Martin beforehand, and he was quite merciless himself about things that I had thought might work, but apparently were not up to snuff, based on the Roman items he's seen.

I wish I had taken more photos of the everyday items in all the Roman museums I've been to. Have been so fixated on res militariae that I've quite forgotten to document the rest, which would have been useful right about now.

No, there is no new function for RAT hosting. If you want to send me a photo of your or Allison in your best outfits, I'll host them on RAT, but they should be this size or smaller, and .jpg format.

Cheers
Jenny

Jenny, letting the undertunic show through is very common, and Allison does that with all hers. The headscarf is a good idea, we hadn't thought of that.

I had a book on Roman jewelry once, on loan, but I'll see if I can find another one. The leather purse is great; we always wonder where soldiers kept their money off duty; fold of the tunic? arm purse? a small leather purse?

Unfortunately one does tend to feel like Mary Mother of Jesus when wearing a headshawl in this manner... However, and this is not my field so help me out, wasn't it somewhat obligatory, at least in the Republican years, for adult women to cover their heads while outdoors?

Now this is probably not so applicable to the imperial frontier culture, as Germanic/Celtic culture which influenced frontier areas seems to have been much more relaxed about women having hair unbound/uncovered.

Cheers
Yes, and further into the imperial period as well. I think statues of Livia have head coverings, but in the Flavian statues the elaborate hair is left uncovered. It would appear that the demands of fashion overtook the older Republican demeanor. In wall paintings in Pompeii women often have head covers, usually transparent, but some do not.

As I am not about to submit my hair to the tortures of Roman hairstyles (nor do I have the length for it anyway, but then again, there are always hair extensions... and one could have a Roman "wig" made ), I will have to wear some type of haircovering.

What did Roman women use to tie their hair? I was thinking leather strips, but unless they are sueded they don't hold all that well.

Cheers
Jenny

looks good Jenny - Ill post more later after work

any close ups of the belt, bag and jewellry at all?
Here are some close-ups...

The sandals are a bit too late for the early period, so I understand, but they are all I have. I have sheepskin inserts for my stratospheric arches.

I bought the belt and two simple fibulae at Xanten 2001.

The buckle on the purse is quite wrong and I will have to replace it.

One can do very well to approximate Roman jewelry by substituting silver Indian jewelry, which is often made rather crudely by modern standards, with common ancient gemstones such as carnelian, with simple faceting or none at all, just polished like my ring. The earrings, tiger eye necklace, and ring are all Indian make. Oftentimes Egyptian vendors will hawk Indian jewelry, and that's where I got mine.

Cheers

Ill start a few new threads with images of jewellry etc from various museums over the next few weeks

Talking History Forum

they are all very 'posh' compared to the clothes I wear jenny

Then again I am portraying a girlie from the North Western Frontier.........where are you from?

Have you shaped the neckline at all?

Deepeeka jewellery?

The belt is very nice.

I think Ive seen mosaics with the short headress style similar to yours - let me have a gander at my pics.

What type of material have you used?

Talking History Forum

Sounds like an imagebase to me

Imagebase indeed, but who will host it?

The material, as you might have guessed, is muslin cotton, perhaps not entirely "wrong" (for a wealthy lady, anyway) but not really something you'd see on the northern frontiers, where wool and linen (and hemp maybe?) would have predominated. I did "dish" the neckline a bit.

I haven't really set upon a persona, I was just going for a generic middle-class woman. Think my jewelry's fancy? Boy howdy, you haven't seen me in all my finery!

Seems from the depictions I've seen that Roman women -- at least the ones who were wealthy enough to have their images preserved in some fashion -- were absolutely bangle-crazy!

Check out all that finery (and oh, a headscarf) on this lady from Palmyra:

Now notice the resemblance between this Roman jewelry below and the tiger eye necklace above (OK, not the stones, not the metal, but the style, yes?)

This portrait from a painted mummy coffin found in Egypt says "middle class" to me, and it's kind of the look I was after. Thank god I do not have to pluck my eyebrows like she should've, However, I am going to have to sew my dresses differently, because the seam is clearly at the shoulders on her dress (you can even see the loosened stitches).

Cheers
Here's a photo of Asellina at the Univ of Penn archaeology museum opening last march. After looking through AT Croom's book she sewed using gap sleeve tunics. You can see the yellow underneath that she sewed; the 'buttons' are actually gathered fabric sewed into a button shape. The green over tunic is from LaWrensNest and has actual buttons for it's gaps. Both are linen.
