I recently found out that the work of Stephen Dando Collins seems to be regarded with disdain on this forum. I realize that there is a lot of disagreement over interpretation of artifacts and such but does there happen to be any authors/historians whose work contains info which there is a general consensus on or is backed by physical evidence (which DC's work appears lack)?

There are always going to be disagreements on interpretation of evidence, but I'd say any of the following recent books would give a solid general introduction, backed up by current scholarship:

Complete Roman Legions - Pollard & Berry

Complete Roman Army - Goldsworthy

Roman Battle Tactics - Cowan

Rome and the Sword - James

Complete Roman Army Goldsworthy would be my favorite, extremely complex but easy to read, goes very in depth and explains good lots of things, Cowan is also interesting I would say in parts it complements Goldsworthy. Both worth the money
