Hi guys,
I'm looking around AD 80 up until just after Hadrian's Wall so about AD 130, and specifically Britain. Sorry I know it all seems very specific but how did officer get promoted in both the legions and axillaries', I've heard it was a mixture of seniority and favouritism/money, is this true?
What do you mean with "officer"? Centurionate? Tres Militia? Senatorial career? Because it differs a bit depending on the type of career.

However, in general money and seniority played no major role in the army of the principate. But in late empire. Patronage, personal performance and of course loyality to the emperor were the major criteria, as far as I remember the analyses about promotion.
