Hi guys,

Firstly I apologise if there is a thread covering this elsewhere. I understand that the majority of the wall itself was built by the legions but does anyone have any information on the units that garrisoned it. I know there were several from Spain and Gaul as well as unit of Tigris boatman from Mesopotamia (Iraq) who garrisoned the Fort in South Shields presumably as they would be able to ferry men across. I just wondered if Hadrian's Wall was some backwater posting as the area was now secured or if it was to be treated as a frontline posting where experienced fighting units were sent.

If you're willing to splash out on a book, Hadrian's Wall by David Breeze and Brian Dobson has always (through four editions) had a lengthy appendix on "The Regiments of Hadrian's Wall", arranged by fort (pp. 256-264) and by unit (pp. 264-276), which is still pretty up-to-date.
