According to that, Mariarosaria Barbera, head of the Rome Antiquities Authority , excavations near the church of Santa Croce die Gerusaleme have confirmed that the Circus Varianus beat the Circus Maximus by at least 9 metres in length. ( ~630 metres that is !)
The Circus Varianus , sited in the south-western corner of the Aurelian Walls, which cut it in into 20/80 (20 % intra mura/80% extra mura), was founded by Caracalla but
finished by Heliogabalus (aka Varius Avitus Bassianus) as a part of the Sessorium Palace complex.
