Where can I find good info on the crestholder for the Italic "D" helmet? I would prefer line drawings, but good photos would help a lot!<br>

Also, speaking with Matt Amt the other night, he tells me there might have been armor or helmet covers to protect fromt he elements -- what would something like that have been made of?<br>

The obvious place to look for drawings of crest holders is Robinson and if you are in close touch with Matt he can probably get you some images.<br>

For armour covers, take a look at some of the Rhineland tombstones. Several of the men are shown wearing a smooth garment over their mail. This may be of oiled leather but to my mind the effect is rather too smooth to be leather, although I can't suggest any alternatives. However, lines of sculptured mail below these garments show that they are indeed supposed to represent a covering of some sort for the armour.<br>

Both an Imperial Gallic helmet from Vindonissa and the Deurne helmet seem to have been deposited in a close fitting thin leather bag that seemed to be made for that specific purpose.<br>
Without seeing reports on them, I am intrigued that they might be something like the covers that protected pickelhaube and cavalry helmets in WWI, so in periods when concealment is required, the helmets can be worn in a subdued manner.<br>

I don't have information on that Vindonissa helmet cover but the Deurne one was clearly a bag, not a cover. It has the exact shape to introduce the whole helmet inside, close the mouth with a drawstring and then hung it from (the saddle?) via copper-alloy rings sewn to the bag's border.<br>
