Is there anything known about the composition, structure, recruiting (etc) of the Numeri Exploratorum of the German limes and northern Britain? These 'companies of scouts' often seem to have based in auxiliary forts alongside the normal garrison, but how many men would have comprised a numerus, on average? I know the ND lists certain 'Praefectus Numeri Exploratorum', but would the commander of a numerus in, say, the early third century have been ranked prefect as well?
