The first ancient coin hoard found in Jersey for 60 years has just been unearthed. Sixty silver coins and one gold. So far as I can tell they're mostly Gallic (and all the ones in the picture seem to be), 1st century BC, but apparently the hoard includes some Roman material. It's only just been found, so I'll keep you updated. Link to the BBC article here - unfortunately the Beeb seem more interested in its current monetary value.
There seems to have been some confusion. According to the Jersey Evening Post website it was fifty- to sixty thousand coins, so either wires have been crossed somewhere, or the 61 coins I quoted earlier (from the BBC) only accounted for the precious metal items. A hoard of 12,000 coins was discovered at the same site in 1935.

It's currently under the joint care of the Société Jersiaise Archaeology Section, and Jersey Heritage (roughly the local equivalent of English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency for those in the UK - sorry, not sure how these things are done elsewhere!).
Its great that the detectorists are working with the Heritage authorities; all as it should be.

Even more interesting is the Iron Age coinage (although the Roman stuff will be interesting too to put it into context).

ROFL!

Why's that then? <innocent look>
No more new information but a much better picture of the Iron Age coins here
New information. Unidentified gold and silver items (possibly including jewellery) have started to emerge amidst the coins.
