The late Roman Army only numbered around 210,000 men for both halves of the Empire in 395.

Although I agree every unit having maile/scale/lamellar is absurd, there is no other practical armor. And we know a lot of units were light infantry, and didn't wear armor, or may have worn linen/leather subarmalis.
Is there any evidence for that?

Two artist(I know)already use such crocodile armour,Peter Dennis and Giuseppe Rava.

Illustrated by another Graham, Graham Turner.

Graham.
Unfortunate misunderstanding-when I mention Peter Dennis I had on mind Graham Turner in fact.

By the way Mr.Sumner,I think your painting of Antonine era legionary you posted here would be ideal to finally be published in the Marcus Aurelius issue of Ancient warfare magazine for example.
Maybe we should only discuss specific topics about the art here, and save discussions about eagles and numbers for the other sections?
Right now I'm starting a new drawing of Romans preparing for the never-to-be campaign of 440, to retake africa, at Panormus.
I've moved the discussions about the eagle to this thread|:

and the story behind it, for those interested: http://inaciem.com/diary/cornicen-and-tubicen

I simply looked at the members of our group and our own instruments to do this picture.
I love it!

Like Michelangelo mooning the Pope. I tell you what putting cherubs flipping the bird to holy men was genius.
