Having been given a load of horsehair, i'm going to make a crest for a coolus helmet. It is planned to be the short box crest seen on some coolus helmets. Can anyone give any advice on dimensions and the type of wood to use.
Sounds cool, I am thinking of making my own crest, got the wood for the crest box,
just trying to source house hair

Pine 2x4 works well...I know they are smaller...say about 1/4 to 1/3rd of the size of a regular one.

There is some information here that should tell you what you need.

Here is a method I have used for many years where you don't have a problem in drilling the outer two rows of holes that can indeed be difficult
The measurement of 3/4 of an inch is just about 2cm
Here is another type of crest that I fitted to a Montefortino helmet that I created, however I don't know if this type would go with a Coolus maybe.

Thank you for the comprehensive instructions. Very much appreciated.
That absolutely needs to go into the tutorials thread
If Magnus would like to have it in the tutorials thread I agree.

House of DeClifford??? i think sell giddyup tails, as far as i know you can not get 'processed' tail hair anymore from uk, last lot i obtained was from a bulk order from the us. have seen household cavalry horse hair crests on ebay though
