Ave,Frater-
Need some advice.I am in the process of repairing an oval auxillary scutum that is minus the grip, and was wondering if the grip was ever placed in a vertical position instead of horizontal? It appears that the grip that was on it previously was vertical, and it would save me from putting more holes in it than I have to.Thanks!

As far as i know the only Auxiliary shield with a vertical grip is the danum shield. It isn't oval more rectangular with a curved top and bottom.
There's also a similar iron grip bar from Newstead that was fitted vertically.

The Danum shield is shown here.. Scroll down about 2/3 of the way down.

The Doncaster shield? Looks very Celtic in style.
But I guess the Auxillia were not always equiped with Roman kit? :???:
If you wanted to do something a bit more ambitious and seldom seen in re-enactment, you could always have a go at this:

You might have to drill one or two more holes though of course.
