It seems to me that the jarr painting wasn't finished... only sketched (the aspis)
I think it was once fully painted, but the white slip or paint or glaze on Classical Greek pottery was notorious for fading or flaking off. I can cite this, but I have to dig out the book...

I found out that white color on pottery was done with a "milk base" and "plaster base" (Titanos in Ancient Greek)
Most surviving images have the "milk based" paint while "titanos based" has left only ... traces!

I'm not so sure about anything fading or flaking off for how do we explain the three black dots and the spear shaft of the figure very strange indeed.
My first impression was that it was something on the glass of the display case, maybe part of an alarm system.
