Personally, I think it would be a good addition, since there's really not much of a place for ladies to display their crafts and clothing in the existing forum, at least not one that would highlight the work that goes into a lady's impression.

Do you mean there was less 'fashion' in clothing, jewellery , etc among the Britons and Gauls as there was among the Romans? I can't think of anything (other than sources like Tacitus who like to give a particular 'image' to back up this statement.
La Tene, Hallstat, etc burials certainly show the opposite!

Civilian clothing has had little attention in re-enactment, which is a pity, I would say. I would say a topic on woman and children impressions would be very useful, as would a 'civilian' topic in general.

I would imagine it deserves a section on it's own, where you could start many topics,

I would ardently support this.
There's quite a few interesting topics about the civilian life on its own and in relation to the military life which come to mind and a lot of work needs to be done on recreating the nonmilitary aspects of Roman life.
Perhaps a "Period Clothing" section would be appropriate, men and women civilian and army could show off their "soft kit" from military tunics to dresses, to chitons, togas... Greek and Roman, as this site focuses on both
When the 'Show here your Roman soldier impression' thread was started, I don't recall there having to be any debate about whether or not it would be a good idea or there being any need for the staff to make a decision about it. Someone came up with the idea and simply started a thread, which has gone on to become a staple of RAT. If I recall correctly, the decision to make it a 'stickie' only came later.
So maybe I am missing something, but is there any barrier which is stopping someone starting a 'Show your Roman lady impression' thread in the Civilian Talk section? If not, then why sit around debating - just do it. If it proves to be a popular thread (and I am confident that it would be) then it will justify being made a 'stickie' in the way the soldier impression thread was.
Does that make sense, or am I missing something huge here?

I don't know for certain, but I suspect that there might be confusion regarding definitions. Of course, anyone can start such a "thread," meaning a new conversation topic like "Newbie (civilian chick) - help." But the administrators / moderators would be needed to start a new "forum" or "category" or "section" like "ancient civ talk."
I think sometimes people use such terms interchangeably, so others are confused on what, exactly, they are talking about.
As I started the discussion, maybe the idea of Matt to make a civilian kit impression for male and female RAT members sounds like a good idea too.
Oh wow! This was just what I needed, as I am fairly new myself. This thread has been VERY helpful. The information has been more detailed that i have been able to find on most websites!
Ammianus, Thank you for posting those pictures. They are VERY helpful. Its great to see such detail in a modern photo of a female reenactor. No offense to you men, but most of the pictures (modern)that I find are of soldiers and officers.

But I agree, for some reason people always forget about the importance of high quality civilian clothing - male and female. :neutral:
I have a tendency to want to dress as a man and get dirty. BUT...with my (top heavy) build, I cannot disguise well enough. I am also putting together Celt, so that I may run around and poke men with pointy sticks!

Well I don't play roles. What I do is focus on reconstructing a type of person. For the Late Roman period I have a high and low status lady impression, as well as an infantry and cavalry man impression. I also enjoy recreating other periods.
I aim to accurately and authentically recreate a look and use equipment as it would have been used. The masses of research involved is fun, and the final reconstructed product can be really satisfying.
For example, at shows we are helping to educate the public about how people lived, worked and fought. In our groups displays we demonstate the use of weapons against different targets, and tactics or skills used. But we do not re-enact battles spesifically. As many members of the public do not buy into the 'dying and getting up again' routine. You are able to teach people much better from a reconstruction perspective. E.g. Not "Hello I am Maximus the Roman" but rather "I am recreating an infantry man from the 4th century in Britain, from what I am wearing you can see that..."
It works really well, and the general public find you less alien to approach.
