I'm not sure where to post this sort of subject, painting that is!
Anyway, this painting is egg tempera using natural pigments, even Lapis Lazuli mixed with drops of vodka to help keep the paints in their liquid form for longer..

Just moved this to the Re-enactment and Reconstruction section which might be better. Anyway, this is a very nice painting and I think we all would love to see more
! I can imagine having this style on my shield, it would be great...
Is it normal for depicted priests to have a nimbus?
When I saw the heading, I was expecting a punchline... :-(

Enlighten me. What is a Nimbus? This painting was started on-site at a show. I was painting from memory re. the Priest's garb.

It was painted on a piece of Scyamore wood. The Background has a base coat of gesso, then red orche as under-paint which was then covered with Lapis for the blue colour!
This piece was an exerise for detail.
Originally I started the painting at the Enlgish Heritage show at Kelmarsh. Anyone who has attended this event will know about the changeable weather!!! Most of the paint was washed off in a very windy downpour of rain. Though I was under canvas, we had horizontal rain.
When finishing this piece I suddenly thought, oh dear the Priest looks like Rod Stewart!!! :roll: :roll:

Have no idea about the nimbus although one would assume it was kept for Christ/saints (if there were such things yet!) But my other query would be the two letters for omega on the soldier's shield. Is that usual? It suggests upper and lower case for the letters...whereas perhaps it should be alpha and omega?

The painting is quite small, only 210 x 220mm. My brush had to be fairly stiff and fine to be able paint in the Omega symbols. I couldn't at the time find the correct reference for Alpha, again painting from memory which is not always prefect. I'm sure in times past the artisans 'got it wrong' too. I produced the painting to please myself rather than strictly keeping to the conventions. The halo was over-the-top.
The pigments behave in different ways when applying them on the chosen surface. Some are very opaque, others very thin.

Sure, my avatar image is another small one produced in an afternoon while at Fishbourne Palace back in August.
I quickly sketched the head with charcoal then used 3 mixed colours plus white.
