After a long wait, my new sword for my Marcomannic War impression is ready!
Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
Very nice! What is the hilt made of?
Bone, horn, wood.
Lovely sword, Byron.
Ooh, nice. Slay them barbarians!!
Yes, me too: nice sword!!

- have a question: how much was it?

Joze
Price is on his website!
Patrick Barta, my favorite smith and arguable the best out there. Looks great!

I've looked at Patrick's site briefly. Some of those spatha, and scabbards, man .. they aren't tools ... they are works of art. Absolutely gorgeous. Oh how I wish I could win the lottery!
In the case celtic swords (on his HP) he is not highly authentical: i know most authentical smiths. I had chanche to order my sword by him, but than i was reserching about the P.B. swords and i have my meaning now. The celtic swords of him aren't correct.
By the roman and later swords i don't have enough knowledge to say, if he is good or he isn't good in authentical view. I don't know, if it goes: the handle comes from xy place, the blade from another xy place and the scabard from "Ljubljanica river"? Are the gladii&spathas&swords made by this mixing-way authentical items?
In the case celtic sword: the most expencive has blade of Damast. No celtic sword has blade of Damast. The handle is not archaeol. evidented, etc ..
Yes, i agree: the swords are artistic-works, but they aren't authentical.
My view on P.B.

In the case of this sword Jose, there does not appear to be any remaining handle elements remaining with the original, neither the spatha not the shorter sword, which this is depicting.
It does follow the style of many swords from the period though, from what I can see!
I would also say the more expensive ones are works of art, and possibly more elaborate in the
handle areas that the original.
However, I picked this one to depict a front line centurion, not a pampered legate,
with gold and other precious metals...so I am content this will do! Cool
I will do an earlier impression for that :-P
Good choice to make an impression of the philosopher-emperors army, Byron Big Grin ! The sword really impersonates the mood when the empire is starting to turn into "iron and rust", it is a no-nonsense, lethal tool indeed. What helmet do you have in mind in this context?
@Byron: yes, i understand. If the facts are like you were writing, than it goes in the case of your sword.
I was talking for all post-celtic swords, not exactly about yours. But in the case P.B.'s celtic swords i have knowledge about them and i can say, they aren't correct. They aren't replicas of the historical swords 1:1 and the Damast blade goes not, too.

Joze
Is there a link to Patrick's site for his makings?
