This will be the 16th annual Ribchester Roman Festival, the aim being to raise funds for the museum. Part of the spectacle of the festival was thrown into doubt early this year and we are proud that Comitatus helped in putting together a funding package to aid this very good cause. Ribchester lies beside the River Ribble, and the event field is a lovely spot bordered with trees. Bits of archaeology are visible, but most of the stonework was used in building the beautiful little village. Ribchester was the site of the first Roman helmet discovered in Britain, a cavalry sports helmet. An excellent museum commemorates the discovery and the Roman history of the town.

Bremetenacum Veteranorum, was an early Flavian fort that was succeeded by a 2.7ha timber late Flavian fort. This was in turn succeeded by a stone fort early in the 2nd century that remained in use into the 4th century. It was garrisoned by Ala II Asturum (late 1st-2nd century?), Numerus equitatum Sarmatarum (2nd-3rd century?) and Cuneus Sarmatarum (3rd-4th century).

The museum's website can be viewed at:

Leg II Augusta and Comitatus will be there.
Was a bit "soggy" to say the least but still worth the long trek up from Exeter
See you again next year
Yes I agree it was horrendous! But we survived! The arena was just mud by the end of the weekend. Confusedhock:
See you next year Kevin, but with less rain

The horses had to take it a little slower but it certainly didn't stop us.

I did feel very sorry for the Augusta's legionaries on the second day...as the rain was dripping off the back of their helmets!

LEGIO II AVG
We can handle the wet no problems
John...names and faces come slowly to me....were you the one riding the white horse...if so i spoke to you on saturday regarding skills etc with a roman saddle after your first ride out...i was the legionare in mail...please correct me if i'm wrong...and obviously if that was you then my second question is irrelevant...Ammianus rode the daker coloured horse.
I am still overly impressed with the skill required to ride on a roman saddle let alone commit to the tasks undertaken whilst riding on said saddle.
I remember the film crew....enough said LOL
See ya next year if not before
Kev
Yyou got the details right there Kevin. John on white, Ammianus on the white and brown.
