Can anyone direct me to some publications illustrating decorated shield bosses? I'm interested in seeing the various embossed, etched, punched designs. I have a few books depicting the Tyne River boss (photo and illustrations), but that's it.
Thanks,
Sounds like a good suggestion for the imagebase, Jasper
Legio XX
Oh yes, good idea Rich. But if you don't mind, we'll just stick to tombstones for now
Illustrated shield bosses are pretty rare, AFAIK. There's one with a Medusa head here in Nijmegen I think. And there's one in the museum in Mainz, but that might well be a copy of the British one.
Greets
These should set you off

Klumbach, H. 1966: 'Drei römische Schildbuckel aus Mainz', Jahrbuch des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums Mainz 13, 165-89

Klumbach, H. 1960: 'Ein Paradeschildbuckel aus Miltenberg', Bayerische Vorgeschichtsblätter 25, 125-32

Klumbach, H. 1970: 'Ein Schildnagel aus Aquincum', Jahrbuch des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums Mainz 17, 146

Klumbach, H. 1977: 'Ein Paradeschildbuckel aus Brigetio', in Bogaers, J.E. (ed.), Studien zu den Militärgrenzen Roms II, Köln, 199-206

But if you want only one monograph (should be accessible in a university library):

Thomas, E.B. 1971: Helme, Schilde, Dolche. Studien über römisch-pannonische Waffenkunde, Budapest

Mike Bishop

Thank you Mr. Bishop,
Your response has been thorough and detailed as usual! (Now all I need to do is learn German.) I want to make drawings if these decorations, so if it is decided to add boss illustrations to the imagebase, I could supply some!
