Is there a comprehensive source anywhere that details what has been proven false (or reasonably determined false) in the Historia Augusta and what can be trusted? I know this is a difficult question, but I'm curious what information and what kind of opinions are out there. The best guide that I know of is here: http://www.livius.org/hi-hn/ha/hist_aug.html

See Ronald Syme's Ammianus and the Historia Augusta (Oxford 1968), Emperors and Biography (Oxford 1973), and the various volumes of the Bonner Historia Augusta Colloquium.

Great! Thanks.
Hi,

There is also a collection of Syme's articles about Historia Augusta:

Syme, R., 1983. Historia Augusta Papers, Oxford.

Syme should be a good source. I've liked other things by him that I've read and he has an excellent reputation.
