Hello.
My friends Pastor gives me an article about the materials booted from an shipwreck near Mallorca (Spain):
Cristobal Veny, “Nuevos materiales de Moro Botiâ€
Salve Lucius,
Thank you and laus for the information on the three Roman helmets found in Spain. I just checked the article on Proquest's Periodicals Archive Online but sadly enough the relevant pages were corrupted in the online version of the article.
I have sent you a private mail with my email and would be very grateful if you could provide me with a scanned version of the article if possible.
Thank you!
I have received the article on Friday - very interesting. Thank you and laus to Lucius.
No, apparently the crest holder arrangement consisted of a simple rectangular metal plate bent to include two "tunnels" for a slide-on crest holder.

Well, that in itself is important as I can't think of another example of a Gallic A with that type of crest holder. In fact,
two tunnels is a first for me. Thanks
The drawing is not particularly clear with respect to the fact that there are TWO tunnels but the Spanish text says:
"En la cuspide de la cofia (...) se halla una plaquita rectangular de 40x60 milimetros la cual se ondula en el centro para dar lugar a la formacion de una especie de DOBLE tunel (...)"
I do not spear a word of Spanish but guessed that this may be referring to a DOUBLE tunnel.
I think there are similar to those founded in some gallic g model. A rectangular plate with a depresed central zone that divides the zone in those 2 "tunnels"...
Something like this:
Also, most unusually, there is a large 'U' shaped fitment at the front of the bowls for the attachment of a crest box.
I have never seen this fitting type before on any Roman helmet.
Also very interesting is the size of the brow guard rivets! Very similar to one of the Nijmegen roped-edge Gallic A's and the Mainz Italic D in their form

Exactly what I have been thinking of for my Gallic 'A'!!
Excellent information people!
Huge neckguard!!....thats one heck of a way of avoiding sunburn at sea- unless its an anti-seagull device......
Maybe the neckguard here is the inspiration for the (in)famous Trooper??
